“A small piece of something larger, it’s form suggesting something grand. Now, it sits easily in your hand but there is a pull, calling to the greater whole. The compulsion to be reunited itches at the base of your skull, a thing forgotten but never known until now.”

It doesn’t matter where you found it, or rather since it found you. Your mind wanders and you discover that you’ve walked off the path in an odd direction. Your dreams are of a sunken grotto and an unfinished shape. You share in the SHARD’S lonely ache to be part of something special. What would you do to be whole once more?

Did it just wink at you?

As GMs, I think we’ve all had a plot device like this, a potential key, a priming point for player imagination, something to say “Why yes, it DOES look like it might be something like that.” It doesn’t need to remove player autonomy to make it the motivation to go on a quest. It doesn’t need to be precious but that’s the sort of thing you would expect in the BORG-Verse, something that you trigger sudden violence if someone took it form you – next thing you know there’s blood and bits of brain on your hands but that’s not as important as getting that piece of the puzzle back to where it must belong.
